Diet
Food is the source of nourishment and sustenance. This page will be in command of my wife. She is the Master Chef. Before you get any wrong ideas, I must clarify that it is definitely not a gender thing. It is just a matter interest and expertise. I can cook and I can survive. My culinary skills are nothing beyond survival instincts helping me to make raw food eatable by means of cooking over a fire. However, when it comes to making food playable, my wife is an artist with a panache. That way both of us (I and Ginger) are lucky to be blessed with her. There's a cook in every house but to have chef is no less than a blessing. So, she controls this page.

Your dog must have access to fresh clean water throughout the day, if not all the time then at regular intervals of 3-4 hours. Of course, it also depends on the weather and heat and humidity. It also depends on activity. An active dog needs to drink more water than an inactive dog. Summer heat may cause more thirst than December snow.
Various brands of dog food are available in the market. Try to feed your dog human grade food for a long and healthy life. If that is not possible, then you may also feed dog food but don't compromise on cost and quality. Look for the best and feed your dog the best food available. A healthy dog will be a delightful companion and one very important factor determining the health of the dog is its diet. Diet is a matter of habit for your dog and that entirely depends on your choice of food to feed. The dog won't go out to hunt raw meat, but the dog will absolutely depend on your for food. You can make or mar it's health by the choices that you make. Your dog is neither a scavenger nor a food processing machine. Your dog is your emotional support system, pack partner, and positive thoughts motivator. Take time to understand your dog and make a diet that suits its health; and you will have a healthy companion without any complaints and complications.
Some Popular Brands Of Dog Food
My dog loves to eat vegetables. These are the vegetables which are my dog's favourite.
Homemade Dog-Food
Food is essential for nourishment. Food helps to build body's defences against diseases. Now-a-days it is fashionable to eat from the packet for it saves the time and lessens the work. However, nothing can beat the food value of a meal made by using fresh vegetables and ingredients in their raw and unprocessed form.
This short video is about homemade dog-food. The recipe is made by my wife. We don't feed our dog kibble. The factory processed pallets from the packet may taste good but that is not human grade food. Human grade means the food that I and you can eat. Can I eat the dog-food sold in packets? No, I can't. Why? It is because the quality of ingredients added to make the dog food is not of the same standard which is fit for human consumption.
Interestingly the selling of dog food is a lucrative business. The pet stores have added fuel to the fire. They tell their customers again and again that it is not good to feed the dog homemade food and it is always better to feed the dog, food from the packets and bags of different brands of dog-food available with them. This is nothing but business. I remember the time when we used to feed our dogs a portion of our meal and the dogs lived a healthy life for a decade or more. The dog food industry is multimillion dollar industry and actively it propounds the myth that dog-food is the best food for the dog.
I beg to differ. Dog food is a good option especially in times of hurry or while traveling with your dog. But it should be restricted to only emergency use when cooking a meal is not a viable option. The dog food making MNC's advertise their preserved and processed food as the best balanced diet for the dog. Like all other advertisement in the capitalist economy, this also aims to fill the coffers of the company at the cost of the canine customer.
I am not saying that dog food is poison. What I am saying is that compared with a homemade meal it is definitely not the better option. Yes, we can't feed the dog whatever we eat for a dog's body may not accept all that food. Some of the things that we commonly eat may also kill the dog. But being said that I must also point out that all the things that we eat are not poison for the dog. Fresh food is always better than processed and preserved food with chemical taste enhancers and artificial flavours.
I have a formula when it comes to dog-food. It is - don't feed your dog whatever you eat but still feed your dog what you can eat.
I strongly advocate against packed dog-food unless it is the only alternative available. Instead of falling for the lies of the pet stores, use your head and do a little research. Find out what is good for your dog. My dog had an ear infection which was persistent and stubborn. It could be curbed by antibiotic injections, but it couldn't be cured. One day while surfing the internet, I came across a small piece of information which helped me to solve the puzzle. It was written there that the dog may be allergic to certain food. A symptom of that will be the dog biting it's paw as if to address an itch. My dog had this habit. I observed carefully and found out that the paw biting is initiated by certain type of food eating. If my dog eats a type of food, then almost immediately it obsessively starts nibbling at its paw with undiluted attention. The article said that the dog might be allergic to gluten contained in certain type of food. Later I also found out through Google that rice, chicken and potato are considered to be anti-allergic. That small piece of information about gluten induced allergy and it's outward paw biting symptom solved the problem of ear infection. This is not true for all dogs but varies as all dogs are not equally allergic to what they eat.
Like a human being, the reason for the allergy on the part of the dog remains a mystery. As in case of a human being the only viable solution is not to expose the dog to the thing that causes allergy. I love to drink sweet and tangy Coca Cola, and eat the crunchy and salty potato chips, and the cheese dripping and intoxicatingly tantalizing Domino's Pizza. But if I live on that then I will surely die of diabetes much before my time. If I want to live long and live a healthy life then I must watch what I eat. Food eaten in the right amount and in the right way will add strength to my body and make it last long. Food which focuses only on my taste buds will give me various diseases and heavily compromise the ability of my body to fight pathogens and the aging process. The same logic stands true for a pet dog.
The pet dog may find the packed dog-food very good to its taste bud because of the artificial chemical taste enhancers but it won't do good for the pet dog in the long run. There is no alternative to homemade food made from natural ingredients cooked over fire the ancient way. It is good for the body for that is how the body is made to work with full efficiency and very little wear and tear. Food adds years to our life. Food blesses us with good health. Food is an inseparable part of our cultural identity telling the story of available food sources and eatable resources in the locality. Food is not packed preservatives available on the supermarket shelves, but food is cooked at home from ingredients living in nature.
